Another in our series of science kits featuring African American Scientists...
Dr. Ernest Everett Just was a brilliant biologist of international acclaim. He spent much of his career studying cells and the role of the cell membrane. Dr. Just was the first black scientist to receive foundation support for biological research. Cells are the basic building blocks of all living things. In this series of experiments, students will observe chemicals moving in and out of a cell by a process called diffusion. For this experiment human cells are too small so a large single cell - a hen's egg - will be used instead. Materials are provided to accommodate a class of 24 students (2 per work station). The materials provided includes 48 - 9oz plastic cups with lids, 12 - 12 plastic rulers and 1 roll of string. A few materials will need to be provided locally (eggs, vinegar and distilled water). Also included is biographical information on Dr. Just and teaching tips for the instructor. Best for grades 5-12. Suitable for home schoolers too.
