Resonant Sympathetic Tuning Fork Resonance Set

 

This unit is designed to demonstrate the resonance, interference and 'beat' of sound. The detachable high quality tuning forks in this set can also be used as a source of sound in other acoustical experiments, such as the speed of sound, the propagation of sound in gas, liquid and solid. the frequency of the tuning forks is 440Hz. They are chromium plated carbon steel, with the cross section of arms 6.5 x 16mm, length of arms 17mm. The resonance box is pine construction 180x88x50mm.   Each fork is mounted on an individually adjusted resonance box. They have identical frequencies, so that when the openings in the boxes are facing each other, either fork will respond in resonance to the vibrations of the other. One of the forks has a slider that will vary the frequency. Forks measure 6 1/2 long. 

These sets have been very popular with energy healers. You can use them to demonstrate entrainment. These forks, especially if they are tuned EXACTLY ALIKE, will behave like pendulum clocks in a room that all have different swings. If you leave the clocks alone and come back later, you will find that they are all swinging at the same time. That's because they've all entrained to the strongest pendulum. In the case of the tuning forks, if you strike one, the other tuning fork will automatically vibrate. If you change the frequency of one and strike the other, the 2nd tuning fork will not automatically resonate. If you have 2 violins with the same strings tuned to each other exactly, if you pluck one string of one violin, the same string on the other violin will start vibrating automatically and you'll be able to hear that.
