All four are made of porcelain and are unglazed on the inside of mortars and bottom grinding areas of pestles. Rims and outside of mortars are glazed with non-lead based glaze. All of them have a pouring lip. The rough inside surface of the mortar is great for grinding spices, herbs, medicines or any other substance which is softer than porcelain.
