 Description

This is a great present for anyone! Pair this great quality UV black light with our flourescent rock set to see the rocks glow! 6 handheld ultraviolet light fixture with flashlight. Works with 4 AA batteries (not included). Checking hand stamps, finding pet stains, checking for bacteria, applying black light sensitive cosmetics, searching for antique glass, and hunting scorpions are just a few uses. (6 1/4 Long, 2 Wide & 3/4" thick) This light works well on longwave rocks is not as effective on some short wave rocks like calcite, willemite or eucryptites.

The General Science Behind VU Light (black light)

We have many items that incorportate Black Light. A "black light" is very similar to a fluorescent fixture. A high voltage transformer supplies alternating current (AC), high energy electrons between two electrodes. They in turn elastically collide with the atoms of the gas inside the tube. This causes the atoms of the gas to be pumped up to higher energy levels. When they drop back down they emit Ultraviolet Radiation, which is invisible to the naked eye. Thus, technically "black light" is a misnomer since black is the absence of color. The only reason we are able to see the purple glow is because of the phosphor powder coating on the inside of the tube. Fluorescent fixtures have a similar coating that is white. The high energy electrons hit the coating and cause electrons to be elevated into higher energy states. When the electrons in the flourescent powder spontaneously return to lower and more stable states they now give off or radiate visible light in the very violet range; thus the purple glow. This is based on the field of "Quantum Mechanics."

APPLICATIONS

Toys
Black lights are used in a great number of ways. A fluorescent chemical inside the toys is stimulated by the invisible black light. Once again the high energy electrons hit the chemical and cause electrons in it to be elevated into higher energy states. The electrons then spontaneously return to lower and more stable states and now radiate visible light in many beautiful colors of green, red, purple, yellow and more.

UV Posters
These work in exactly the same way as toys.

Geology
Many rocks and minerals contain substances that respond in the same way to black light, causing them to flouresce.

Biology
Many creatures possess organic materials that also respond to UV light. In addition, a number of them are known for their bioluminescence. The light of fireflies for example, is the result of chemicals that are triggered by minor electrical signals within their bodies.

Chemistry
Certain chemicals possess a trait called chemoluminescence. Mixing these chemicals produces light by a similar quantum mechanical process.
