Oscillating Reactions - Yellow to Blue and Back Classroom Demonstration

As you mix a yellow solution on a magnetic stirrer, the solution will turn to blue and back to yellow. This will be repeated over and over again as the iodate and iodine concentrations fluctuate. This is a version of the iodine clock reaction known as the Briggs-Rauscher reaction. Enough chemicals are provided to do this reaction seven times.

75 ml 12% hydrogen peroxide

75 ml potassium iodate solution

75 ml starch solution
