Balancing Bird Physics - Teaches Mass and Center of Gravity

 

The Eagle balances on anything -- its stand, your finger, pencil point, your nose.... It never fails to fascinate and amaze. Thanks to two well-placed weights at the end of its wings, its center of mass is located below the tip of its beak, creating a stable equilibrium. Students can experiment by adding small pieces of tape to change its center of gravity. Each comes individually packaged with stand. Balancing bird has an Approx 4.75 inch wing span and the black stand is approx 2.5 inches high. It doesn't defy gravity - it takes advantage of it. Show students how deceiving an object's center of mass can be, spin it on its stand to demonstrate rotational motion, or discuss movement in two systems by moving the stand through the air to add translational motion.
