Our popular Animal Kingdom and Plant Kingdom posters were published in 2004 and their primary purpose was to provide an introduction to the various living species in accordance with the classification system introduced by Carl Linnaeus in 1735, which grouped species by phyla, orders and families.
That system has since become obsolete due to the widespread adoption of the new Cladistics classification system, which is based on the development of physical characteristics and arranges organisms by their order of branching in an evolutionary tree. It has been used in most universities and colleges since the late 1990s and is now finding it ways into the grade schools. This new poster shows this new system.
Simultaneous with this revolutionary change in classification systems, many new species have been discovered. Some have been so unique, that they have been given their own phylum/clade.
Our 2004 poster showed only living species. This all-new version includes the extinct ones. The result is a comprehensive overview of all life that has lived on Earth. The number of phyla/clades has jumped from 27 to 41. This new version shows almost twice as many species.
These changes and improvements result in a quantum leap presentation. These posters are sure to become indispensable references for both students and professionals. They will be useful for the botanists and zoologists, but also the various paleo scientists.
