Fridge Fractiles 7 - Magnetic 48 Piece Set
by Fractiles, Inc.

The Fridge Fractiles includes 48 colored flexible magnetic tiles and color illustrated cardboard CD style package to store tiles. Makes great stocking stuffers! Can be  used on a refrigerator, filing cabinet, magnetic white board or any surface where a magnet will stick.

Based on the number 7, these magnetic tiles will allow you to re-create one of the suggested designs or something aesthetically pleasing in either a repeating or non-repeating pattern of your own design. The word "fractile" comes from a combination of the words fractal and tiles. Coined by the mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot, who wrote that fractals are "self-similar", meaning that each portion is a smaller replica of the whole. In other words, a fractal is a geometric shape that is detailed and complex, while being similar at every level of magnification. One of the best examples of a naturally occurring fractal is the fern. When you look closely, you see the same pattern reproduced at each level with each leaf seemingly made up of miniature ferns, repeating the shape of the whole as the size of the scope decreases.

Our universe is another example of a fractal. Our sun is just one star amongst billions of other stars that make up the Milky Way Galaxy, which is just a small portion of a "Super Galaxy", which is in theory just a piece of a super-super galaxy, with the pattern repeating ad infinitum. We can go the other way as well, by viewing the world of sub-atomic particles. Each one is composed of smaller structures within those structures, all composed of similar structures.

Just like there's no known limit to how large or small fractals can be, there is also no known limit to the number of patterns and designs that you'll be able to create with Fractiles.
