Ampholytes exhibit the characteristics of both an acid and a base, and can react either as an acid or a base. When zinc chloride reacts with sodium hydroxide the soluble zincate ion is formed. (The zincate ion allows zinc to zinc to plate on copper.) When zinc hydroxide reacts with hydrochloric acid, zinc chloride and water are formed.
