Determination of Water Hardness Classroom Kit
by Aldon Corporation

By using titration and the reagents included in this kit, it is possible to determine where on the scale of water hardness your sample water is. The kit includes 4 bottles of 500mL EDTA solution, 2 bottles of 200mL pH 10 Buffer, and 2 bottles of 15mL eriochrome black T (EBT) indicator solution.

EBT will bind with the free metal ions in the water to form a pink complex, while EDTA, with its stronger affinity for the same ions, will replace EBT and turn the solution from pink to blue, signaling that the end point of titration has been reached. By titrating your sample mixed with EBT into the EDTA, and knowing its molar concentration, it is possible to determine what concentration of metallic ions are present in the water sample.

The kit comes complete with MSDS sheets for each of the 3 reagents, as well as a teachers guide for setting up and running the Water Hardness experiment.
