Dr Henry Cecil McBay worked his way up from humble Texas beginnings to Chemistry research and teaching. Throughout his long career he inspired students and won many awards and honors in the field of Chemisty.  One of his favorite demonstrations combined 2 materials to make a new substance with properties totally different from the originals. 
 
It is commonly known that hydrogen and oxygen combine to make water. In The Electrolysis of Water demonstration, water will be broken down into these two gases. Hydrogen and oxygen gases will be collected and observed with glowing splints. This hands-on experiment is easy and fun.
Recommended for grades 5-12
There are materials provided for 24 students (2 per station). Materials included are
  • Biography sheet for Dr. Henry Cecil Mcbay
  • 12 Hoffman electrolysis apparatus
  • 0.1 M Sodium Sulfate solution
  • 1 roll of masking tape
  • 12 battery leads with alligator clips
  • 12 splints 
  • 1 pack of matches
  •  6 test tubes
  • Procedural instructions
  • Teaching tips for the instructor
Most of these materials can be used again and again.
Twelve 9V batteries must be provided locally.
