Product Details

Students will learn about saturated and unsaturated fats. By making soap and candles, students learn that fats are not just in food. High school students will make esters by combining carboxylic acids and alcohols. In hydrolysis, the reverse reaction of esterification, fats are broken down into fatty acids and glycerol. Middle school students will enjoy making different types of soap and comparing their properties. Both middle school and high school students can make candles with and without stearic acid, which prevents dripping. Additional activities include making slime, emulsifying peanut oil, and making cleansing cream. Students of all ages will enjoy the surface tension experiments.
