Product Details

Fitzroy's Teardrop Storm Glass is a historical weather forecast device, once used by seafarers to predict oncoming storms. Developed on the premise that temperature and pressure directly correlate to solubility, this hand-blown liquid-filled glass tube allows the user to forecast the weather by observing the appearance of the liquid in the glass. It is a visually stunning decorative ornament that is both functional and attractive. The Fitzroy Storm Glass is made of high quality glass with encapsulated liquid. This specific mixture was developed by Admiral Robert Fitzroy and used on his voyage with Charles Darwin on the HMS Beagle. During the historic voyage, Fitzroy carefully documented how the storm glass would predict the weather. In 1859, violent storms struck the British Isles. In response, the British Crown distributed storm glasses, then known as "Fitzroy's storm barometers," to many small fishing communities around the British Isles that were to be consulted by ships at port before setting sail.

  • Liquid sealed in glass container responds to changes in the weather
  • Hand-blown glass teardrop design
  • Works on the principle that temperature and pressure affect solubility
  • Liquid is affected in part by barometric pressure and changes in temperature
