Chemiluminescence in Blood Stain Detection
by Innovating Science

Luminol is a chemiluminescent compound that can be used in trying to detect blood at a crime scene. The iron within the bloods hemoglobin can serve as a catalyst in oxidizing luminol, allowing blood to be seen even if there are no traces visible to the naked eye. Hemoglobin is relatively stable, allowing for luminol to be used in blood stain detection even if several years have passed. Much like the presumptive blood test however, certain chemicals like bleach or peroxidase are also capable of being the catalyst in the oxidization of luminol. Because luminol can potentially contaminate or destroy some of the genetic evidence within blood, spraying large areas with luminol is generally held as a last resort and used to support other trace evidence that may have been collected from the scene of the crime.

In this kit, a solution of simulated hemoglobin will be sprayed onto a cloth, used to create blood spatter, or hastily wiped up, so that students can experience different stages of blood at a crime scene. Once the hemoglobin has been applied to the selected area of study, a UV lightsource can be used to enhance to the chemiluminescent properties of the luminol. Using red-tinted glasses can further enhance the visibility of the chemiluminescence.

This kit contains:
2x 15g bottles of Luminol
0.1g bottle of Simulated Hemoglobin
Teacher's guide

Other materials not provided, but recommended:
UV light (alternate light source)

Each bottle of our reagents comes standard with an SDS/MSDS sheet. If you require a copy of this prior to purchase, please contact us.
