The 25 grams of potassium polyacrylamide 3-4mm granules is enough to demonstrate to a class of 30 the following experiment:

A glass container appears to contain only water and a small loop of thread hanging down in the water. When the string is lifted out, a large shiny crystal is found to be in the loop. When the string is lowered back into the water, the crystal disappears again.

Example of Class Discussion:

Because the crystal is almost entirely made of water, it looks like water. Light is not refracted at all as it passes from the surrounding water into the crystal. When the crystal is lifted into the air, it can be seen because its index of refraction is very different from the index of refraction of air.

Potassium Polyacrylamide granules are non toxic and environmentally safe. When placed in water, these crystals absorb gram for gram up to 400x their weight (which means 1 gram of crystals can absorb up to 400 grams of water). Distilled water is de-ionized and more pure thus will produce the best growing results and form larger chunks. When fully hydrated (depending on water, could be as soon as 15 to 30 minutes or as long as 24 hours), these polymer gel pieces feel cool and look like ice. 

In addition to science experiments, Ghost Crystals or Jelly Crystals are used in commercial applications. Potassium Polyacrylamide crystals are used to conserve water on golf courses, manage erosion, equestrian arenas (dust control), landscaping, horticulture, agriculture and hydroponic farming.  

Directions for use: As gel crystals dry, add more water. To make colored crystals, food dye is added to water before soaking. To clean discolored or cloudy hydrated crystals, rinse in warm or hot water in strainer or colander. Discarded crystals should be thrown in a garbage container. If crystals accidentally enter drain, add table salt and flush with hot water to dissolve. If allowed to completely dry out, the hydrated crystals will revert back to the original, dry crystal state which can then be re-hydrated if desired.

Recipe: 1 gram (approximately 1/4 teaspoon leveled as much as possible) to 400 grams water (approximately 13.5 fluid ounces) will produce about 1 to 1.5 cups of hydrated crystals. Depending on purity of water, all of the water may not absorb into crystals. Drain excess water as needed. 

Chemistry: Potassium salt of cross-linked polyacrylic acid/polyacrylamide copolymer.
Physical Form: White/yellowish granules, free flowing.
Storage Life: > 1 year, dry conditions, unopened bags/containers.
