Pack of 5 Large Barn Owl Pellets - 1.75-2.25 Inches Long
by OnlineScienceMall

Our large owl pellets measure from approximately 1.75 to 2.25 inches in length. We take great pride in specializing in only the best quality owl pellets. Each one is collected, dried, sorted, heat sterilized, and wrapped before being shipped out. Each order received will come with a bone sorting chart that can be photocopied for all of the students in the class.

All of our owl pellets are from Tyto alba, also known as the barn owl. It is the most widely distributed of the owl species, and one of the most widespread of all birds, having been found almost everywhere in the world, with the exception of both polar and desert regions, in Asia north of the Himalayan mountains, the majority of Indonesia, and some of the Pacific Islands.

The dissection of an owl pellet is a fantastic and informative science experiment, and is a natural teaching tool for all grade levels from kindergarten all the way up to collegiate level. As a teaching tool, it is a great way to learn about things such as the food chain, principles of ecology, skeletal anatomy, and more.

In the world of ornithology, which is the study of birds, a pellet is the undigested material of a birds meal that has been regurgitated. What can be found in a pellet will vary greatly, depending entirely on its diet, and can include things like insect exoskeletons, bones, fur, feathers, claws, teeth, and more. Aside from just ridding itself of pieces that are unable to be digested, regurgitating a pellet actually serves to keep a bird, particularly birds of prey, healthy, as the pellet scours the esophagus, proventriculus (stomach), an ventriculus (gizzard).

Pellets are typically regurgitated 8-10 hours after the bird has fed, and the size of each pellet can can contain the skeletal structure of one or more prey items, depending on how much the bird has fed. Typically, if multiple prey are consumed within a short time frame, a singular, large pellet is formed, rather than multiple smaller ones. Additionally, the shape, texture, and color of a pellet depends on the species of bird, and it consumed. Some pellets will be tightly compacted into an oval shape, and slightly furry, while others are loosely packed together and have an irregular shape.
