Welcome to our Liquids, Solids and Gasses video hands-on lab. Our lessons are inquiry and standards-based. You'll find them entertaining, educational, safe, and easy to implement. We've build them so you just have to make a few copies, then press play.
The objective of this unit is to teach your students about matter. They will learn the following: the basic definition of matter, to identify the three states of matter, matter can change from one state to another, and some matter can exits in two or more states.
An understanding of matter and its forms is a crucial building block of science education. This lesson details the definitions and differences between solids, liquids and gasses. It explains how some matter can change forms - then revert back again. Hands-on has students make a non-Newtonian fluid, fun to handle and perfect for stimulating discussion about the differences between solids and liquids.
This unit contains: quick start guide, teacher's notes, one dvd, hands-on activity: Ooey Gooey Solid or Liquid?, Hands-on Activity GAK What type of matter is it?, Take home/Class Activity Fishing for Ice, Master Sheets, MSDS for all materials are on the DVD in a folder titled MSDS.
Numerous gas demonstrations: carbon dioxide, temperature change, smoke bombs, CO2 flame extinguishing
Smoke bombs demo
Dry ice-up close.
Students make a non-Newtonian fluid by mixing two substances together. They handle and observe its behavior. Teacher leads a discussion of whether it's a liquid or a solid, and why each student has his or her opinion.
Matter I Outline:
Matter is all around us (park scene)
Definition: It takes up space and has weight.
It is categorized into solids, liquids and gasses.
Solids hold their shape.
Liquids fill their container.
Gasses expand with heat and contract with cold.
Some matter can change form from one state to another, and then can change back again.
