The Hooey Stick Mechanical Motion Classroom Kit
by Koontz Educational

Traditionally consisting of a notched stick with a propeller attached at one end, the Hooey stick is also known as an ouija windmill, or a gee-haw whammy diddle. A second stick is pressed against the grooves cut into the first, and then rubbed up and down along their length. The friction causes the propeller to rotate around the pin or nail holding it in place.

The classroom kit contains enough material to create 24 Hooey sticks, and also includes a lesson plan for teachers and educators. Made of heavy duty foam, the Hooey stick is an excellent way to teach students about different topics in physics and physical science, such as energy and motion, the conversion of energy, how linear motion can be converted into rotational motion, and vibrations. Those are just a few of the concepts that can be investigated using this classroom kit; how many others can you incorporate into it?
