The only significant deposits of tigereye that have been found in the world are in South Africa. Tigerye aptly gets its name from the golden brown color and chatoyant appearance of the mineral that reflects light like the eye of a tiger.
Tigereye was formed over a long period of time when the mineral crocidolite was replaced by the mineral quartz. Crocidolite's crystal structure is fibrous. It is composed of magnesium, iron, sodium and silica. The delicate fibers of crocidolite can easily be separated by hand. When silica-rich solutions infiltrated the crystal fibers of crocidolite under the ground, quartz was deposited, taking the shape of the crystal fibers of crocidolite. The golden color of the tigereye was caused by trace amounts of iron oxide. Tigereye is used for making jewelry, carvings and other art objects.
